HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!!!
This is the best time of year for me!!! It brings back so many good memories as a kid. Life was terribly hard back then, and this was the only occasion that had the least amount of shit attached to it. It didn't matter that we never had money, our costumes were just slapped together and no one said anything about it. We didn't have to worry about cleaning the mess we resided in so that others could come over. Nor did we have to worry about meals or presents as we could hardly afford that stuff. We didn't have to be around family who basically hated each other and fought all the time. We just wandered around the streets and got free candy. It was awesome. We'd have 'food' stockpiled for a while after that so not much worry about going hungry. A lot of my candy was picked through, most of the good stuff taken, but there was still enough left over for (sort of) sustenance, and that was just fine by me. I'd never remember what all I had in my loot anyway, so it didn't really matter, and I never knew who all were taking it, so there was no point in fighting.
But the day itself was just fun. Dressing up cheaply, having fun with 'friends' (classmates), doing Halloween crafts and watching movies. Then going to Grans place to have a warm dinner, in a warm clean house, her dressing us up (usually as Gramps...in his construction hat and reflector vest, with a mustache drawn on) and sending us on our way.
Playing in the crunchy leaves, the fresh crisp air with that amazing smell of Fall, the kids laughing, lights on all down the blocks with awesome decorations everywhere. Everyone busy trying to get as much as candy as they can that no one even notices the others. There's no fighting. No bullying. No making anyone feel less for not having something as great as they have. Just a bunch of kids having a good time.
When we'd get back to Grans, we'd pig out and watch Halloween cartoons on her coloured cable TV. It was so fun to see Garfield, Charlie Brown, and best, Walt Disney Halloween cartoons...the Sleepy Hollow/Ichabod Crane story is still my favourite, but Donald Duck and all those cartoons are pretty awesome. Sadly, after though, we'd head back to our cold, scary existence. But at least for that short amount of time it was an absolute dream of a day.
The years that I was my Grandparents live-in caretaker, I decorated their place all the time and got tons of kids who loved my setup...it was such a blast...decorating is so much fun!!! I still decorate now but it's pretty much just for me. Kids never stop by out here and that's sad but ok. I don't mind doing all this work for my Self and my Parts as I deserve to have this kind of fun in my life whether others come and enjoy it too or not. It's sad to think this is the last Halloween of my 40's, oh man, that it's been half a century of celebrating, but I will always decorate for Halloween as long as I can move and do all that work.
But asides from the absolute blast I have decorating, and the fun memories I have from when I was a kid, the best part of Halloween for me is meeting my Man!!! Had I not loved Halloween as much as I do, I would have never gone to volunteer at a Halloween event being put on at his place for the local fair and would have never met him. His and my love for Halloween is what brought us together and I am so lucky and grateful for this season! Halloween truly is the best time of year for me in every way possible!!! I hope you all enjoyed this super fun day as much as I did!!!
